In 1974 in Ethiopia, the world-renowned expert on human evolution, Donald C. Johanson, made a remarkable discovery. In the desert sand, he found fragments from an ape-like creature that walked on two legs. It turned out to be one of the most famous hominin fossils ever, popularly known as “Lucy”. The 3.2-million-year-old exceptionally well-preserved skeleton provided a crucial link between more ancient ancestors and younger ones, including those who were directly ancestral to modern humans.

The “Harmonies and Healing” initiative features Min-Jung Kym (pianist and author of “Music to Help Overcome Cancer”) and Jakob Arndt (cellist), who share their individual stories, revealing music’s healing strength. Alongside her is Professor Sebastian Debus, a renowned cardiovascular surgeon and medical professional focused on music’s health impacts, and Gerrit Glaner, a dedicated International Arts Consultant, who both represent the Brahms Billroth Foundation, an organisation committed to exploring and promoting the synergy of music and medicine. Together, their narrative underscores music’s unique capacity to heal and inspire beyond the confines of science and art.
About the Brahms Billroth Foundation : Music's potential to aid in healing body and mind is profound, yet it remains under-researched. Musicians, facing occupational health risks, need specialized medical attention to address conditions related to their practice. To foster these initatives, the Brahms Billroth Foundation for Music Medicine was established in 2023, with bases in Hamburg and Vienna. Johannes Brahms and the eminent surgeon, Theodor Billroth, shared a profound friendship and exchanged ideas and discussions on music and medicine, thus laying an important basis for the synergy of music medicine. The Foundation supports musico-medical research, public healthcare, and the intersection of art, science, and community engagement. Når Deres Majestæter Kongen og Dronningen den 2. maj 2024 går officielt ombord på Kongeskibet Dannebrog, markeres samtidig begyndelsen på en ny sejlsæson og Kongeparrets videreførelse af traditionen med årlige sommertogter.
Siden Christian 9.s tid har Kongeskibet om sommeren været benyttet til togter til forskellige danske byer, og med Kongeskibet Dannebrog som residens har den kongelige familie gennem årene besøgt store dele af Kongeriget. Traditionen er siden blevet videreført af Christian 10., Frederik 9., Hendes Majestæt Dronning Margrethe og nu også Kongeparret.
Deres Majestæter gennemfører i år et sensommertogt med Kongeskibet Dannebrog den 19.-22.
august. Togtet indledes den 19. august i Bornholms Regionskommune, hvorefter Kongeparret besøger Ærø Kommune den 20. august og Assens Kommune den 21. august. Årets sommertogt afsluttes med besøg i Vejle Kommune den 22. august.

In 1974 in Ethiopia, the world-renowned expert on human evolution, Donald C. Johanson, made a remarkable discovery. In the desert sand, he found fragments from an ape-like creature that walked on two legs. It turned out to be one of the most famous hominin fossils ever, popularly known as “Lucy”. The 3.2-million-year-old exceptionally well-preserved skeleton provided a crucial link between more ancient ancestors and younger ones, including those who were directly ancestral to modern humans.
To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the discovery of Lucy and the species Australopithecus afarensis, we are delighted to present Donald C. Johanson and Peter C. Kjærgaard, Director of the Natural History Museum of Denmark, in a conversation about our quest to understand human evolution. Join them as they discuss the significance of Lucy and the future prospects of the science of human evolution.
